Baptism and Marriage in the Orthodox Church

Who can be baptized and married in the Orthodox Church

If you have the desire to get your child or even yourself baptized into the Orthodox Church, or you are planning to get married in the Orthodox Church please read the following notes.
Holy Baptism

Baptism and Chrismation in the Orthodox Church is the entrance into the Holy Church.
We are happy that you are interested in baptism for your child or even yourself.

If you have a newly born child that you want to have baptized please consult with the priest of the parish as early as possible. Ideally you want to talk to the priest before the baby is born.

At least one of the parents must be Orthodox of a Canonical Orthodox Church and in good standing. The sponsor must also be an Orthodox Christian in good standing of the same sex as the one to be baptized.

The church will spiritually guide the mother and her child from the day the child is born, the name giving on the eight
day and finally the Baptism, Chrismation, and Churching on the 40th day.

All this must be coordinated with the priest for the exact days that are agreeable to all. Also the health of the child might have to be taken into consideration.

If you are an adult that is inquiring to join the Orthodox Church please also approach the priest at your earliest convenience. Preceding Baptism and Chrismation an adult will have to go through a time of preparation we call the catechumenate. This time will be used to be taught basics of the Orthodox Faith and lead to a better understanding of it.

Please approach the priest after a Divine Service in this matter. Details can then be arranged accordingly and questions can be answered then. You can also use the contact form on this website to contact the priest of SS. Sergius and Herman of Valaam parish.

Holy Matrimony

Holy Matrimony is one of the Mysteries of the Orthodox Church.
Entering into a marriage in the Orthodox Church is considered a life time commitment. Hence it has to be prepared and considered in all seriousness.

At SS Sergius and Herman of Valaam counseling is mandatory for a couple that is inquiring Holy Matrimony.

When you are planning your marriage you must contact the priest at the very minimum three months before the planned date. Better would be six months to give enough time to plan the meetings.

You must not set a date for your marriage without having consulted with the priest.

There are many days during the year where the tradition of the Orthodox Church will not allow a marriage to be performed.
Other circumstances (prior marriages, non-orthodox spouses etc.) also require extra time in the preparation.

Please approach the priest after a Divine Service in this matter. Details can then be arranged accordingly and questions can be answered then. You can also use the contact form on this website to contact the priest of SS. Sergius and Herman of Valaam parish.
